When I interviewed for the position of pastor at Crossroads Church of God in Milwaukee, I told the search committee that I would never be "just" the pastor for the church -- I would also be the pastor for the community, one way or another (as I did at a previous church). This MPD/SA chaplaincy just happens to be "the way" for this time and place.
I am now an official volunteer chaplain with the Milwaukee Police Department under the auspices of The Salvation Army. I'm on probation, so I won't get a backpack with various supplies for 2-6 months, but I have my required badge and vest, plus optional shirt. My probation assignments will be a relatively light-weight community and MPD events where I shadow an experienced chaplain, after which I will be ramped up to accident and crime scenes. This Wednesday, my first assignment will be to go to my police district and pray for the officers at roll call.
