When I interviewed for the position of pastor at Crossroads Church of God in Milwaukee, I told the search committee that I would never be "just" the pastor for the church -- I would also be the pastor for the community, one way or another (as I did at a previous church). This MPD/SA chaplaincy just happens to be "the way" for this time and place.

I am now an official volunteer chaplain with the Milwaukee Police Department under the auspices of The Salvation Army. I'm on probation, so I won't get a backpack with various supplies for 2-6 months, but I have my required badge and vest, plus optional shirt. My probation assignments will be a relatively light-weight community and MPD events where I shadow an experienced chaplain, after which I will be ramped up to accident and crime scenes. This Wednesday, my first assignment will be to go to my police district and pray for the officers at roll call.

Join with us as we celebrate our dear sister and lift her up in prayer as she serves her community, grows in her profession, and shapes the future by being a servant leader.
Post and Congratulate Marlene

Celebrating the Firsts: Trailblazing African Americans in the Church of God

2/28/2019

We would not be here today without the people who blazed the trail before us. These National Leaders of the Church of God Movement were the first African Americans to lead in their respective fields, in their generation, in leadership, ministry, and service. While this list is not exhaustive, we honor all those who had gone before and were firsts in their places of service. Today and every day we will continue to celebrate their accomplishments because we would not be where we are today without them. These individuals made space for others who follow after them and continue to carry the torch and blaze trails for tomorrow's leaders.

Finding Good Women in the Church of God - Proverbs 31

Proverbs 31:10-31 MSG
A good woman is hard to find,
and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve,
and never has reason to regret it.
Never spiteful, she treats him generously
    all her life long.
She shops around for the best yarns and cottons,
    and enjoys knitting and sewing.
She’s like a trading ship that sails to faraway places
    and brings back exotic surprises.
She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast
for her family and organizing her day.
She looks over a field and buys it,
then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden.
First thing in the morning, she dresses for work,
rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.
She senses the worth of her work,
is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.
She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth,
    diligent in homemaking.
She’s quick to assist anyone in need,
reaches out to help the poor.
She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows;
their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.
She makes her own clothing,
and dresses in colorful linens and silks.
Her husband is greatly respected
when he deliberates with the city fathers.
She designs gowns and sells them,
brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops.
Her clothes are well-made and elegant,
and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.
When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say,
and she always says it kindly.
She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.
Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:

“Many women have done wonderful things,
    but you’ve outclassed them all!”

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
Give her everything she deserves!
    Festoon her life with praises!
